November/December Book Group - Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson

"Running into a long-ago friend sets memories from the 1970s in motion for August, transporting her to a time and a place where friendship was everything—until it wasn’t. For August and her girls, sharing confidences as they ambled through neighborhood streets, Brooklyn was a place where they believed that they were beautiful, talented, brilliant—a part of a future that belonged to them.

But beneath the hopeful veneer, there was another Brooklyn, a dangerous place where grown men reached for innocent girls in dark hallways, where ghosts haunted the night, where mothers disappeared. A world where madness was just a sunset away and fathers found hope in religion."

New members are always welcome!

Book Group - The Seed Keeper

A haunting novel spanning several generations, The Seed Keeper follows a Dakota family's struggle to preserve their way of life, and their sacrifices to protect what matters most.

Rosalie Iron Wing has grown up in the woods with her father, Ray, a former science teacher who tells her stories of plants, of the stars, of the origins of the Dakota people. Until, one morning, Ray doesn't return from checking his traps. Told she has no family, Rosalie is sent to live with a foster family in nearby Mankato--where the reserved, bookish teenager meets rebellious Gaby Makespeace, in a friendship that transcends the damaged legacies they've inherited.

On a winter's day many years later, Rosalie returns to her childhood home. A widow and mother, she has spent the previous two decades on her white husband's farm, finding solace in her garden even as the farm is threatened first by drought and then by a predatory chemical company. Now, grieving, Rosalie begins to confront the past, on a search for family, identity, and a community where she can finally belong. In the process, she learns what it means to be descended from women with souls of iron--women who have protected their families, their traditions, and a precious cache of seeds through generations of hardship and loss, through war and the insidious trauma of boarding schools.

Weaving together the voices of four indelible women, The Seed Keeper is a beautifully told story of reawakening, of remembering our original relationship to the seeds and, through them, to our ancestors.

Creative Collaboration in Comics w/ Mat Heagerty (for 2nd to 8th graders)

I walk students through the basic process of how I get graphic novels made, from conception, to pitch, to finished book! I also answer the age-old question:
"If you don’t draw the graphic novel, what do you do?” We look at different jobs people can have in graphic novel publishing and learn how being open to collaboration leads to the best book possible!

Students will work together to create a single panel comic. Each student will have a chance to do each of four jobs: create a title, draw line art, color, and write dialogue. At the end, there are some funny, unique comics that could have never come from just one person.

We’ll end our session with a Q&A and signing if applicable. I recommend students prepare questions before the session.

Movie Mavericks: Film Makers Who Challenge the Hollywood System

Patrick Anderson focuses on contemporary film directors and screenwriters in the United States whose originality, independence and unconventional approaches to the medium have contributed to the evolution of the industry. The program enables a greater understanding of and appreciation for both the content and form of movies made outside the mainstream Hollywood system, and considers some of the key differences in theme, style and narrative format between these works and the more conventional fare of so-called "classic cinema."

Among the filmmakers to be examined are Steven Soderbergh, David Lynch, John Sayles, Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, the Coen brothers, Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, P.T. Anderson, Jim Jarmusch and Charlie Kaufman. Patrick Anderson urges participants to view and analyze a variety of film clips carefully so that, by the end of the session, they will be more visually articulate and critically aware of how one "reads" a film.

The Art of Aging Gracefully

Join Jackson Penfield-Cyr for a talk about the foundational best practices for a healthy lifestyle. He writes, "We're all getting older. As life expectancy continues to increase, it's clear we need to work toward a new image of aging - one that includes adaptive, productive, vital years full of love, laughter, and intimacy. In this talk, we'll explore how the 'secrets' to aging gracefully exist within the routines of daily life, and how by understanding the biology of being human, we can implement best practices of being healthy, which is the key in determining whether we just add years to our life or we add life to those years."
